| Description: | The Helmsdale Boulder Bed, a very coarse breccia with clasts up to many metres in length is a fossilized submarine fault-scarp talus deposit formed on the Helmsdale Fault. The clasts are Middle Old Red Sandstone in age. The Helmsdale Granite is one of the Caledonian 'Newer Granites' intruded after the main metamorphic crystallization and deformation of the surrounding rocks of the Caledonian Orogeny. The granite is 98 square kilometres and is a steep-sided stock-like mass with a coarse porphyritic adamellite outer and a fine pink-grained non-porphyritic adamellite centre. Jurassic Helmsdale Boulder Bed (the foreground and lower half of stack) faulted against the Helmsdale Granite seen in cliff on left. The stack is joined to the cliff by a wall of boulder clay. |
