Caption: Carn Dearg, the north-west spur of Ben Nevis from the north-east, Inverness-shire.
Description: In the corrie on the left behind the smooth rock step are two small lochans (not seen). The cliffs are composed of andesite lavas and agglomerates of the central part of the Ben Nevis Complex. On the summit of Carn Dearg many rocks which look like agglomerates on closer examination turn out to be andesites that have undergone flow-brecciation. The flow-breccias are particularly common in the upper portions of the lavas. Part of a series of photographs making an overlapping panorama of the north-west cliffs and buttresses of Ben Nevis from photograph C01794 to C01801. The view shows the contrast between the smooth slopes of the ice-moulded bottom of the valley and the frost-shattered cliffs above. Part of a panorama with C01801. The description is for the full panorama.
