Caption: Ben Nevis from the north-east, Inverness-shire.
Description: The rocks form the central core of the Ben Nevis Complex and consist of hornblende andesite lavas and agglomerates. The latter are largely unstratified and consist of angular blocks of hornblende andesite of all sizes up to 4 feet across. Mixed with these are blocks of red porphyritic felsite and occasional pebbles of quartzite or phyllite. It can be very difficult to separate the compacted agglomerates from the brecciated xenolithic andesite lavas. Part of a series of photographs making an overlapping panorama of the north-west cliffs and buttresses of Ben Nevis from photograph C01794 to C01801. Cliffs of andesite lavas and agglomerates of the central part of the Ben Nevis Complex showing the contrast between the smooth slopes of the ice-moulded valley bottom and the frost-shattered cliffs above. Part of a panorama with C01799. The description is for the full panorama.
