Description: The south side of the arete at the head of Allt a' Mhuilinn on the east side of Ben Nevis, Inverness-shire. Frost-shattered granite showing splitting action along joints and the development of scree slopes below. Frost action is an exceedingly powerful agent in the mechanical disintegration of surface rocks. In the cold climate of a Scottish winter at this altitude, water enters the fine crevices, pores and joints of the granite. On freezing and turning to ice the water has a 10.9% increase in volume. This exerts a tremendous force that tends to both split the rock along the joints and between mineral grains in the rock. With repeated freeze-thawing the blocks eventually detach and if above a steep slope will fall and form a scree slope as in the photograph.
