| Description: | Above Polldubh, the valley is open and U-shaped, a typical glacially eroded and widened valley. Beyond a right-angled bend ascending the glen the river flows through a deep and narrow gorge cut in the base of a very high-level gap which shows intense glacial erosion. Because of ice-moulding to the very bottom of the valley it is not postglacial in origin, and at the same time it is considered too narrow to be the direct work of glacial erosion. The inference being that this is a pre-glacial section of the Glen Nevis valley. Glacially moulded gorge in hornfelsed mica-schists (Leven Schists, part of the Lochaber Subgroup of the Dalradian Supergroup (Precambrian)). The waterfall ('An Steall') of the 'hanging valley' of Allt Coire a' Mhail, is seen in the distance. |
