| Description: | Castle Haven Geo, Castle Girnigoe, Caithness. An excellent and typical example of a geo formed in the Castle Haven Formation of the Upper Caithness Flagstone Group of the Old Red Sandstone (Devonian). The 'geo' is formed by the quarrying action of the sea along master-joints in the flagstones. The right, or exposed side is still being eroded; the left, or protected side is giving way to detailed sub-aerial erosion. Note the regular shaped blocks that have been loosened by the marine erosion, their shape entirely controlled by the master joints and the flaggy bedding. The 'Castle Haven Band' a distinctive bed on account of its lack of bedding laminae can be seen low down on the stack and the cliff face on the left. |
