Description: | From Ruantallain, Loch Tarbert, west coast of Jura, Argyllshire. Distant view of the Paps of Jura. Note the barren quartzite crags in the foreground and the farmed fields close to the sea. The dry-stone walls surrounding the fields and forming the sheep pens would have been largely built from material gathered up from the fields to clear them of stones. Most of Jura is composed of the Jura Quartzite formation (Islay Subgroup, Argyll Group, part of the Dalradian Supergroup) which totals more than 3 km in thickness. Much of the subsistence level agriculture in the Hebrides relied on such small patches of more fertile ground close to the sea. |
