Description: Ruantallain, Loch Tarbert, west coast of Jura, Argyllshire. Bedded quartzite. Cliff of gently dipping bedded quartzites. This photograph is a good illustration of the barren nature of the topography in many parts of the west coast of Scotland. Quartzite is a very hard metamorphic rock composed almost entirely of quartz. It therefore has very few other minerals which could degrade to form a balanced soil. This, together with the climate and exposed situation, results in very thin soils which are poor in plant nutrients.
