Description: Allt na Gile, south of Loch Tarbert, west coast of Jura, Argyllshire. Stream terraces in moraine. Stream erosion has downcut into unconsolidated moraine material forming successive terraces. This may have been caused by falling sea levels, which allowed the stream to cut back towards its head from successively lower base levels. Moraine is an unconsolidated mixture of material which has been moved or deposited by glacial action. Typical examples are end-moraines, mounds of material dumped at the margin of an ice-sheet. Side moraines originate from material which falls from the rocky walls of a valley onto the surface of the glacier.
