Description: Rubha Aoineadh an Reithe, 3.6 km. north of Inver Cottage, south-west coast of Jura, Argyllshire. Basalt dyke forming a sea stack. Thick Tertiary basalt dyke trending seawards and forming a modern sea stack. On its landward side, the dyke is breaking up into large blocks, presumably along joints within the intrusion. The foreground shows a good example of a shingle beach, with vegetation growing on older and higher parts of the shingle. As igneous rocks, dykes are often more resistant to erosion than the country rocks into which they are intruded. In this instance, it appears to be only the jointing in the dyke which is the source of weakness, rather than any softness of the actual basalt, which forms a pile of resistant blocks.
