| Description: | Killellan, 6.4 km. south-south-west of Campbeltown, Kintyre, Argyllshire. Volcanic plugs. Distant views of three volcanic plugs of andesite of Lower Carboniferous age, piercing Upper Old Red cornstones (Kinnesswood Formation) and Lower Carboniferous lava flows (Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation). The resistant nature of the intrusive rocks makes them stand out as prominent features in the landscape. Scotland was very active volcanically during the early Carboniferous period, with huge volumes of lava poured out as plateau basalts. There were also numerous contemporary basic and intermediate intrusions such as dykes, sills and plugs. |
