Description: Carrickfergus. Looking SW. Carrickfergus Castle. The castle rests on a dolerite dyke which shows well-developed jointing. The castle is mainly built of basalt or dolerite blocks. The lighter-coloured quoin stones are Permian Magnesian Limestone from Cultra on the south shore of Belfast Lough.
