Description: | Comiston sand-pit, 4.8 km. south of Edinburgh, Midlothian, with large ice-rafted erratic slab of lava. Ice-borne mass of andesite, probably derived from Pentland Hills, resting on glacial sands and gravels with layers and nests of boulder clay. The site is now much overgrown but can still be visited. Such a large displaced rock mass is unusual but illustrates the potential for glaciers to move huge quantities of rock for considerable distances. This is merely at the large end of the size spectrum of erratic blocks which litter the landscape of Scotland and are a characteristic feature of glaciated terranes. |
