Description: Shore, 3.7 km. south of Ballantrae, Ayrshire. (Near Dove Cove.) Ordovician pillow lavas. Views to illustrate the sack-like or pillow-form structure in basalt lava (spilite) of Ordovician age. The steeply-dipping orientation of the pillow long axes (which were originally sub-horizontal when extruded) shows that these lavas have been tilted into a near-vertical attitude. Such steep dips are common in the Southern Uplands terrane. The Downan Point Lava Formation, now considered to be of Caradoc age, was formerly equated with the Balcreuchan Group lavas of proven Arenig age.
