Description: Achorn Burn, 2.5 km. west-north-west of Dunbeath, Caithness. Postglacial gorge in Berriedale Flagstones. Thinly-bedded flaggy purple siltstones and sandstones forming the upper part of the Berriedale Sandstone Formation (Middle Devonian) are exposed in the cliffs on the left and right, and large angular boulders of the same material form the stream bed. This narrow gorge has been cut by a river running from the gently-sloping inland plateau of Caithness to the sea in postglacial times.
