Description: River Findhorn at Quilichan, Nairn. Remains of high plateau out of which the Findhorn Valley has been carved. Moraine terraces on hill-slopes and recent alluvium of river in foreground. Bedrock exposed beside river at foot of cliff is granodiorite, locally pegmatitic, of the Quilichan Granodiorite Vein Complex, which intrudes strongly metamorphosed sandstones and siltstones of the Central Highland Metamorphic Complex. This is overlain by glaciofluvial sand and gravel, which also forms sloping terraces in middle distance. Most of the higher ground is covered with peat, which conceals till of variable thickness, which in turn overlies bedrock, largely psammitic. The largely concordant hill summits in the distance are remnants of a possibly Neogene high-level erosion surface.
