| Description: | Near head of Coire Bog, 2.5 km. north-east of Lochan a' Chairn Lodge, Ross & Cromarty. Peat moss with layer of roots of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), from 1.0-1.8 m. above the base of the moss. Peat hags, with dissected vegetation exposing peat formed in the past 4000 years to erosion. Within peat deposits, roots and trunks of trees are occasionally found. These trees may be anything from a few tens to a few thousand years old. The older trees were probably killed by a deterioration in climate, but recent tree death is likely to have been caused by soil erosion due to overgrazing. |
