Description: From summit of Meall a' Ghrianain, Ross & Cromarty. Looking west. Dissected high erosion surface covered with rock debris. Mountains formed of psammites (metamorphosed sandstones) and minor pelites (metamorphosed mudstones) of the Moine Supergroup. A gently-sloping erosion surface 700-850 m. above sea level, probably of Neogene age, has been dissected by fluvial erosion in pre-glacial times, then subjected to glacial erosion, which has deepened and broadened valleys during the valley-glacier phases of the glaciations. The plateau remnants are covered by a regolith of frost-shattered blocks, mostly formed during the Loch Lomond Stadial 10,000-11,000 years ago, when periglacial conditions prevailed.
