Description: Acton Quarry, Winnows Hill near Slaley. Looking NW. Weathering features in high Namurian sandstone. Close-up near western end of quarry face. High Namurian medium to thick-bedded coarse and very coarse-grained, occasionally pebbly sandstone. Note irregularity of jointing and unusual type of sub-rectangular to sub-ovoid 'box stone' weathering; this weathering is frequently enhanced by differential colouring. Sandstone is very soft and virtually uncemented. See also photos. L2963-67, L2969.
