Description: Close to Ashbourne-Clifton road 80 m. NE of Halfway House, S. of Ashbourne. Close-up view of Ashbourne Gravel near Halfway House. The section shows a cross-bedded quartz sand lens (beside the compass) within a poorly sorted sandy gravel; the whole being well-cemented by calcite. A count of 190 pebbles showed 58% Carboniferous Limestone, 21% Carboniferous sandstone, 17% quartz and quartzite, 3% chert and 1% other types. The Ashbourne Gravel is regarded as pre-Wolstonian in age.
