Description: Beside old railway embankment, 150 m. SSW of Haywood Farm, N. of Ashbourne. Close-up view of Ashbourne Gravel near Haywood Farm. The section shows poorly sorted calcite-cemented coarse gravel consisting of sub-angular to rounded pebbles and cobbles up to 20 cm. long. A count of 109 pebbles show 72% Carboniferous Limestone, 26% Carboniferous sandstone and 2% chert and silicified limestone. The Ashbourne Gravel is regarded as pre-Wolstonian in age.
