Description: Near mouth of Dunbeath Water, Dunbeath, Caithness. Raised beach in foreground. Scarp of Middle Devonian conglomerate on left. Low ground in foreground and behind cottages is a postglacial raised beach, only 2-3 m. above O.D. Such raised beaches come closer to present sea level northwards, and are virtually indistinguishable from present-day beaches in north Caithness and south Orkney, while in Shetland they are below present sea level. The vegetated escarpment to the left is made of sandstone and flagstone of the Middle Devonian Berriedale Sandstone Formation.
