| Description: | Loch Morlich, Rothiemurchus, 8.047 km. east-south-east of Aviemore, Inverness-shire. Storm beach of sand, due to prevalent westerly winds, at east end of freshwater loch. Cairngorms in distance. Loch Morlich lies in a drift-filled hollow about 1 km. north of the northern contact of the Cairngorm Granite. The unexposed bedrock is Grampian Group psammite (metamorphosed sandstone). At the eastern end of the loch is a sandy beach produced by wave action on the sandy, largely granite-derived, till and moraine forming the floor of the loch. In the distance the Cairngorm mountains are made of granite. The large trees form a remnant of the great Caledonian pine forest. Note the extent to which loose sand has blown from the beach to form mounds under the trees. |
