Description: | View looking west down Glen Coe from Achtriochtan, Argyllshire. To show the rock barrier covered with morainic drift, damming Loch Achtriochtan. Ridge at far end of loch is cored by bedrock, but covered by moundy glacial deposits. The rock bar lies close to the ring fault marking the boundary of the Glencoe Cauldron Subsidence. Within this fault, Lower Devonian andesitic and rhyolitic volcanic rocks are intruded by many subvertical andesitic dykes. Just outside the ring fault is the granitic ring intrusion. Meall Mor, the hill in the distance is made of Dalradian Leven Schists (Lochaber Subgroup) and Ballachulish Limestone (Ballachulish Subgroup). |
