Description: Stacks on shore at Muchalls, Kincardineshire. Buckling structure and shear-planes in gneiss of sedimentary origin. Stack left after marine erosion of adjacent rocks, exploiting subvertical joints in flaggy, micaceous psammite (metamorphosed sandstone) with gritty beds, belonging to the Glen Lethnot Formation (Southern Highland Group, Dalradian Supergroup). Bedding is gently-dipping, but inverted. Minor folds and warps, typically with subhorizontal axes trending north-east, are ubiquitous. These later (D4) folds fold earlier tight folds whose limbs are locally sheared out.
