Description: | The Gegan, 5 km. east of North Berwick, East Lothian. Cliff of bedded tuff, showing characteristic weathering and Bass Rock (a phonolite plug) in the distance. Bedded basaltic tuffs of the Garleton Hills Volcanic Formation (Strathclyde Group, Visean). Hardness of rocks very variable. Rocks thinly bedded despite presence of large basaltic clasts. Finer-grained beds show good lamination but cross-bedding is very rare. In distance is Bass Rock, a volcanic plug filled with phonolite (see photo B00552). |
