Description: | The Gegan, 5 km. east of North Berwick, East Lothian. Characteristic weathering of bedded tuffs. Bedded basaltic tuffs of the Garleton Hills Volcanic Formation (Strathclyde Group, Visean). Note relatively poor jointing. Tuffs are rather thinly bedded, despite presence of large basaltic clasts, and cross-bedding appears to be absent. In foreground is marine erosion platform, with tuffs dipping at c.10 degrees to the left. Note small harbour cut in tuffs showing their relative softness and ease of excavation. Walls of this harbour are vertical and little or no splitting along joints has occurred. |
