Description: | Near 'The Gegan', 5 km. east of North Berwick, East Lothian. Cliff of coarse-grained basaltic tuff, and platform of recent marine erosion. The Bass Rock (a phonolite plug) in the distance. Bedded basaltic tuffs of the Garleton Hills Volcanic Formation (Strathclyde Group, Visean). Note the presence of clasts up to 2 m. in size within the tuffs (base of cliff). Hardness of rocks very variable. Small arch has been eroded in cliff. Finer-grained beds show good lamination and possible cross-bedding (below and left of large blocks). To left of cliffs rocks are well bedded and may include some sandstone or tuffaceous sandstone. In distance is Bass Rock, a volcanic plug filled with phonolite (see photo B00552). |
