Description: | West side of Oxroad Bay, Tantallon, 4.5 km. east of North Berwick, East Lothian. Cliffs of tuff and agglomerate. Cliffs of vent agglomerate filling two separate vents form most of the cliffs. However, below the castle, the lower part of the cliff consists of siltstones, sandstones and mudstones of Ballagan Formation (Inverclyde Group, Tournaisian), dipping gently shoreward. To the right of the cliffs is a present-day platform of marine erosion. In the distance is the Bass Rock, a phonolite plug filling a volcanic vent (see photo B00552). |
