| Description: | North Berwick Law, seen from north-east, East Lothian. A plug of phonolite filling a volcanic vent. Rounded plug of phonolite, a fine-grained, very hard, rock similar to trachyte but containing nepheline. With few joints, the plug is very resistant to erosion. The base of the hill closely follows the margin of the plug, which intrudes basaltic tuffs of the Garleton Hills Volcanic Formation (Strathclyde Group, Visean), which are covered by glacial till. Some glacial scouring along the north (right) margin of the plug, and rudimentary crag-and-tail formation, with tail to east (left). Note children beside wall. |
