| Description: | Kincraig, Elie, Fifeshire. Stacks of agglomerate in 'Kincraig Neck'. The 'Kincraig Neck' is a large volcanic vent filled with agglomerate of basaltic composition. The vent is c. 1.5 km. from east to west and 600 m. from north to south. Being more resistant than the surrounding sedimentary rocks, the rocks of the vents are well exposed along the coast. Large blocks of basaltic rock are abundant within the vent. The vent cuts through sandstones with minor mudstone and coal belonging to the Limestone Coal Formation (Clackmannan Group, Namurian). The vent is of late Carboniferous or early Permian age. Note angular fragments of basalt standing proud of the matrix of the agglomerate, also the characteristic subrounded surfaces of the stacks. |
