Description: Wemyss, Fifeshire. Ancient sea caves in cliff of sandstone at edge of raised beach. Foreground marks edge of postglacial raised beach, which is now grassed over. Cliff is made of soft sandstone within the Middle Coal Measures. Sandstones at top of cliff display honeycomb weathering, due to variation in amount and nature of cement. Sandstone is thickly bedded, with traces of cross-bedding visible in some beds. Note gentle folding in sandstone, with rocks dipping to right near tree and horizontally in and to right of cave. Joints are widely spaced, and have been exploited by wave action to erode the caves.
