Description: | Kingswood, between Burntisland and Kinghorn, Fifeshire. Characteristic weathering of agglomerate, in 'neck' intrusive in Strathclyde Group (formerly Calciferous Sandstone). Small vent filled with basaltic agglomerate intrudes sedimentary rocks of the Sandy Craig Formation and volcanic rocks of the interdigitating Kinghorn Volcanic Formation (Strathclyde Group, Lower Carboniferous). Note hollows in cliff face where larger clasts in agglomerate have fallen out due to weathering. Agglomerate is very poorly jointed. Variations in degree of cementing of agglomerate give rise to variations in hardness, causing irregular weathering. A large basaltic clast can protect the softer agglomerate underneath from weathering, e.g. pinnacle at top of photo. |
