Description: The Binn, Burntisland, Fifeshire. General view of the Carboniferous volcanic 'neck' of The Binn. Agglomerate, formed almost entirely of basaltic clasts of varying size, fills a vertical pipe-shaped volcanic vent of Carboniferous age, including mudstones, siltstones and sandstones of the Sandy Craig Formation (Strathclyde Group). The resistant agglomerate forms the high ground above the level of the lowest trees on The Binn. In the right of the picture, the low hill is formed by a bed of sandstone dipping gently to the left, which contains abandoned quarries.
