| Description: | Shore between Kildonan and Bennan Head, south coast of Arran, Buteshire. Bird's-eye views of Palaeocene dolerite dykes cutting Triassic sandstones. The Arran centres mark the roots of two of the many volcanoes which formed in western Scotland during the opening of the North Atlantic, 55-60 million years ago. At this time the crust was stretched and thinned. Basaltic magma was intruded along the fissures, which in south Arran ran mainly north-south. Here basalt dykes form up to 10% of the thickness of the rocks (measured east-west). |
