| Description: | A mountain formed by the thrusting and folding of Torridon Sandstone and Cambrian strata, beds highly folded and with occasional thrusts. In this area there is no basal thrust at the western margin of the Moine thrust belt. Instead, the 'foreland' rocks are folded into broad open folds with north-south axes, and cut by minor thrusts following the axial planes of the anticlines. In the far distance on the left, the ridge joining Creag Dhubh to Sgurr Ban, is formed of quartzite of the Lower Cambrian Eriboll Sandstone Formation, repeated by a series of minor thrusts. On Ruadh-stac Beag, centre-right, a small amount of Torridonian sandstone (Applecross Formation) is exposed (left side of hill), but most of the mountain is made of highly folded Eriboll Sandstone, with mudstones of the An t-Sron Formation preserved as small patches near the summit. |
