| Description: | John Weir working with a sluice box at the gold diggings in the Windgate Burn, c. 1936, Leadhills, Lanarkshire. John Weir has excavated the old alluvial gravels, containing particles of gold, down to bedrock. The gravel is placed in the sluice box, or ?trough?, where the gravel is washed and sorted and the stones and lighter materials are removed leaving a concentrate of heavy minerals, including the gold. The gold-bearing alluvial gravels of the Leadhills district were worked on a large scale during the 16th century. Since then, the gravels have been worked by the lead miners during their spare time who collected gold to order and for wedding rings. One of the more successful miners was John Weir, who worked the gravels during the miners? strike of 1921. |
