Caption: | Major slump in interbedded sandstones and siltstones. Wyresdale Tunnel (Lune-Wyre Link) south-east of Lancaster, 975 m. from the Rowton Portal, Lancashire. |
Description: | The penecontemporaneous slump, clearly indicated by contrasting siltstone and sandstone lithologies, occurs in an area of disturbed strata, with very variable dip. The photograph shows some 5 m. (horizontal distance) of the structure which can be traced south-eastwards for a further 10 m. The more competent siltstones and mudstones are more intensely deformed, especially adjacent to the sandstone boudins (e.g. top centre of photograph). The observer's hand rests on the slide plane at the base of the slump which dips towards the bottom right of the photograph. The slump indicates a palaeoslope from the north-west to the south-east. The penecontemporaneous slump is one that has occurred immediately after deposition but before consolidation of the enclosing rock. |
