| Description: | N. side of Tees Valley, Great Wood, near Eggleston between Barnard Castle and Middleton in Teesdale. The south portal of the Wear-Tees tunnel. The south portal of the 14.5 km. Wear-Tees tunnel - a component part of the Kielder Water Scheme, and at the southern end of the Tyne-Tees aqueduct. The tunnel mouth is driven in at the horizon of the main sandstone member overlying the Rockhope Shell-Beds. The portal is overlain by boulder clay in which a minor slip has occurred. In the foreground is the rear edge of the terrace deposits on the north side of the River Tees hereabouts. Some 2000 m. of the tunnel had been driven northward when this photograph was taken. |
