Description: River Wear valley W. of Frosterley. Looking N. South portal of Derwent-Wear tunnel. The south portal of the 13.5 km. Derwent-Wear water tunnel - a component part of the Kielder Water Scheme. The tunnel mouth is driven in at the horizon of the Nattrass Gill Hazle (Visean) (Alston Group) here overlain by old terrace deposits of the River Wear. Plantation in background on spoil heaps of Rogerley Quarry. Some 3,500 m. of the tunnel had been driven when this photograph was taken.
