Description: River Dove, 560 m. S. of the Hanging Bridge, Mayfield. Looking S. South bank of River Dove, Mayfield. View showing the alluvium of the River Dove in front of the cut-side bank of a meander incised into soft, occasionally pebbly, sandstones of the Sherwood Sandstone Group (Triassic) which are overlain on the left of the photograph by gravels of the Second Terrace of the Dove. These gravels thicken to the south and form a flat feature c. 6.1 m. above the alluvial flat of the present river. A section in these gravels is exposed just to the left of the photograph, and is the subject of Photograph No. L1647.
