Description: South-western edge of Darley Moor Airfield (disused), Ashbourne. Looking NE. View across Darley Moor Airfield, Ashbourne. The photograph is taken from close to the site of the IGS Darley Moor borehole which proved 18.85 m. of till overlying Permo-Triassic mudstones and sandstones. The flat plateau-like surface seen in the photograph is thus regarded as a till plain rather than an erosional remnant as suggested by Clayton (1953). The till is correlated with Chalky Till underlying gravels with Ipswichian mammalian remains in the Derwent Valley (Jones and Stanley, 1974), and is thus pre-Ipswichian in age. Clayton, K. M., 1953, The denudation chronology of part of the Middle Trent Basin, Trans. Inst. Brit. Geographers, 19, pp. 25-36. Jones, P. F. and Stanley, M. F. 1974. Ipswichian mammalian fauna from the Beeston Terrace at Boulton Moor, near Derby. Geol Mag. III, (6), pp. 515-520.
