| Description: | The sandstones in the quarry at Greatgate range from pale purple to white in colour and are still much sought after for building. Known generally as Hollington Stone they are still actively quarried in the Hollington - Greatgate area. Greatgate Quarry showing a sandstone block about to be levered out after sawing. Strong north-south joints, the presence of well-marked bedding planes and the sporadic presence of mudstone bands and laminae all aid the quarrying operation. The well-bedded, often cross-bedded, nature of the sandstone, and the erosive contact between setts can be clearly seen. The Hollington quarries have a long history dating back to Roman times. The sandstone which ranges from pale purple to white in colour has been widely exported outside the area for conservation work. The largest building in which the stone has been used is Coventry Cathedral. Hollington Stone was also used for the building housing the medieval Mappa Mundi at Hereford Cathedral. |
