Redesdale Ironstone Shale (some 5 m. below the Redesdale Limestone in the Upper Border Group) showing the concentration and size of the ironstone nodules once picked out and smelted at Ridsdale. The continuous bed of ironstone at the bottom of the face is called the Redesdale Shell Bed, source of many of the excellently preserved fossils of this area. The bed was too calcareous for smelting. |
