Description: Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda. Looking SE. Hydraulic shaft, headgear. Erected in mid 19th century. Water from the tank behind the headgear was run into the smaller tank forming the upper half of the cage (seen on left-hand side) until the weight was sufficient to lift the second cage, containing the slate, from the shaft bottom. Height c. 25 ft.
