Description: Locharbriggs Sandstone Quarry, Locharbriggs, near Dumfries, Dumfriesshire. Freeing the block of sandstone from the quarry face 3. Tamping the hole ready for firing the gunpowder. The black powder is poured into the hole and gently tamped (compacted) in the bottom of the hole. A piece of fuse would then be inserted and then lit. A small piece of used fuse is seen between the quarryman's feet.
