Description: Locharbriggs Sandstone Quarry, Locharbriggs, near Dumfries, Dumfriesshire. Freeing the block of sandstone from the quarry face 1. Drilling holes for the placing of gunpowder. The blocks of sandstone must first be separated from the quarry face or floor, in this case it is being prepared for separation by blasting. A series of holes are drilled into which gunpowder charges are inserted and fired, so releasing the block. A quarryman is drilling holes for placing of gun powder using a pneumatic drill. The hose for the compressed air supply can be seen attached to the drill.
