Description: Foss Barite Mine, Aberfeldy, Perthshire. 670 m. level B1 stope. A miner is shown simulating the use of a jackleg drilling machine for making holes into which explosives are inserted. Note the walls coated in fine barite dust from previous drilling. The jackleg is the light bar supporting the jackhammer. The black hose running with the jackleg to the drilling machine is for the compressed air supply. The typical cycle of mining is drilling, blasting, mucking (removal of broken rock) and then ground support (if necessary).
