Caption: | Oblique aerial view of Snabe Sand Pit, near Torfoot, Strathclyde. Looking north-west. |
Description: | The quarry is situated on an extensive terrace area of sand and gravel deposited at the end of the last glaciation when the ice melted and large volumes of meltwater drained northwards carrying great quantities of glacially eroded material. The terrace is built of cross-stratified sand and gravel overlain in places by patches of peat. The processing plant where the sand and gravel is washed and sorted is on the right behind the settling pond which allows sediment to settle from the plant effluent. |
