| Description: | Hutton's famous unconformity at Siccar Point. The section shows vertical greywackes and shales of Llandovery (Silurian age) overlain unconformably by gently-dipping red sandstones and conglomerates of Upper Old Red Sandstone (Devono-Carboniferous age). An unconformity is a substantial break in the geological record. Its usually is shown when one rock unit overlies another that is not in stratigraphic succession and usually with a structural discontinuity. This could be an interruption of the continuity of sedimentation or a break between eroded igneous rocks and deposition of sedimentary rocks. Interest in the geology of Scotland goes back to the very beginnings of the science, notably to the examination by James Hutton in the late 18th century of the unconformities at Jedburgh and here at Siccar Point. His interpretations of these outcrops were embodied in his 'Theory of the Earth' published in 1795 and incorporates ideas fundamental to scientific geology. |
